Medical wigs are specially designed wigs intended primarily for individuals undergoing chemotherapy, dealing with conditions like alopecia, or facing hair loss due to medical reasons. While there may not be strict regulations or a precise definition for medical wigs, they are tailored to meet the unique needs of those who require long-term wear during treatments and seek to alleviate the psychological burden associated with changes in their appearance.
Individuals undergoing chemotherapy or experiencing conditions like alopecia often require wigs that offer “comfort” for extended wear, “breathability” to ensure comfort during hot summer months, and materials that are “gentle” on sensitive scalps. Additionally, they look for wigs that provide a “natural” appearance to help reduce the emotional stress associated with their altered appearance during treatment.
As a result, many wigs designed for medical use prioritize “comfort” during extended wear, “breathability,” and the use of gentle materials for the scalp. These characteristics set them apart from more extravagant colors and styles commonly found in fashion wigs, highlighting the distinction between medical and fashion wigs.
It’s important to note that while medical wigs are designed with specific medical considerations in mind, they can still be used for fashion purposes, and conversely, fashion wigs can also be used for medical reasons. The key lies in the unique features and considerations that medical wigs offer to cater to the specific needs and comfort of individuals dealing with medical-related hair loss.
In 2015, amid the absence of a clear definition for medical wigs, the industry organization known as the “Japan Hair Industry Joint Association” (JHAIR) initiated a standardization effort for MWIG (Medical Wig). This voluntary industry association, comprised of wig companies, established the MWIG standard to ensure a minimum level of quality and safety for wigs intended for use by individuals undergoing cancer treatment and others.
The MWIG standard, in accordance with JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) 9623, defines specific quality requirements. It includes four key inspection criteria: “allergy patch testing,” “free formaldehyde content check,” “wash resistance,” and “sweat resistance.” Wigs that meet the defined criteria for these inspections are certified as “MWIG.”
To obtain MWIG certification, wig manufacturers must first ensure compliance with the JIS 9623 standard. The inspection process involves dividing the wig into different parts, such as “hair part,” “net part,” “skin part,” and “internal cap,” with specific inspection items assigned to each part. For instance, the “hair part” may require tests for “formaldehyde content” and “allergy testing.”
Wig companies send hair samples and component materials to accredited testing facilities capable of performing the tests outlined in the JIS. Once the test results are obtained, and if the values align with the JIS standards, the wig is considered compliant. Wigs that do not meet the JIS criteria are not eligible for MWIG certification.
Finally, the test results and a declaration of self-compliance, stating that the wig is made from the tested materials, are documented in an “self-compliance declaration form” to obtain MWIG certification. Currently, 27 companies in Japan are recognized as certification bodies, and Lineastoria received MWIG certification as a certification body in October 2015 (Certification Number: JHA1510L007).
At the outset, I mentioned that wigs designed for individuals undergoing cancer treatment or experiencing hair loss, such as those provided by Lineastoria, are required to offer “comfort for extended wear” and “sufficient breathability even during the summer.” Lineastoria has obtained MWIG certification and offers a wide range of wigs that can be worn with confidence even during medical treatment.
Thanks to the support of many customers, we have achieved remarkable milestones in Japan’s medical wig industry, including the sale of over 210,000 medical wigs and securing the top position in the online wig sales category for eight consecutive years since 2012.
The key to these achievements lies in the invaluable feedback we have received from numerous customers and our unwavering commitment to the quality of our wigs. Allow me to introduce our dedication to excellence:
In Lineastoria’s medical wigs, we make sure to offer styles that resonate with the latest trends, allowing you to say, “I want this hairstyle.” Our product development involves collaboration with medical beauticians who contribute their expertise to research the latest styles!
We conduct technical training at overseas factories more than 15 times a year, enabling us to introduce over 20 new styles annually. Our wigs are designed to make you think, “Yes, this suits me!” You’ll find yourself reaching for the mirror with confidence.
Lineastoria’s medical wigs are crafted using the ‘hand-tied construction’ method, where hair is directly hand-knotted onto the wig cap. Unlike wigs mass-produced by machine implantation, our wigs are remarkably lightweight and replicate the natural appearance of hair growing directly from the scalp.
The ‘hand-tied construction’ not only ensures a comfortable fit ideal for extended wear but also provides the breathability needed for year-round use. These qualities are made possible uniquely through the hand-tied construction method.
We pay meticulous attention to the ‘crown’ section of our wigs, which plays a crucial role in achieving a natural look. We offer various types of crowns, with close-to-scalp color choices, excellent breathability, hair elevation, and customizable parting. Our customers appreciate the peace of mind in knowing that our wigs look natural even when viewed from above, such as on public transportation!
Within Lineastoria’s staff, we have individuals with extensive experience as wig users. We actively involve their real-life insights and ideas in the wig development process. Many of our loyal customers, who rely on wigs for their everyday needs due to conditions like alopecia, appreciate the contributions made by our knowledgeable staff.
Synthetic hair is made from chemical fibers and is artificial in nature. Its shape memory feature makes it resistant to style loss, and styling is generally straightforward.
Lineastoria’s synthetic hair is created by blending several types of raw materials to achieve both ‘smooth combing’ and ‘reduced shine,’ providing a balanced combination.
One of its advantages is affordability, making it easy to replace when needed. The durability can vary depending on how frequently it is worn, but typically lasts around 3 to 4 months.
Compared to synthetic hair, 100% human hair offers a more supple, soft texture with a pleasant touch. It lacks the artificial shine and bundle appearance often seen in synthetic hair, resulting in a more natural look. However, it is prone to developing waves or curls, so styling such as blow-drying may be necessary. In terms of durability, it typically lasts around a year, depending on how frequently it is worn.
Lineastoria’s human hair blend consists of 30% human hair and 70% synthetic hair. By mixing the advantages of both human and synthetic hair, it achieves a well-balanced combination. This blend offers a natural appearance and is easy to maintain and style. In terms of durability, it typically lasts around six months, depending on how frequently it is worn.
